VOBSS Membership Letter
July 2021

Dear Seniors,

We hope that wherever you are, you have had at least one COVID-19 vaccination, and possibly two! We can begin to consider ourselves ‘survivors’ while still feeling the loss of those who were not so fortunate. We have been forever changed by this virus, some of the changes are good and some not so good. Through it all, the Voices of Burnaby Seniors have learned new skills and discovered talents that we didn’t know we had in order to keep in touch with each other. In fact, we seem busier than ever.

We are writing to ask that you renew your membership to Voices of Burnaby Seniors Society for 2021. If you are not a member of VOBSS, we ask that you join us.

The following is a brief summary of the activities VOBSS has been involved in over the past year.

After becoming a non-profit society, we were fortunate to obtain a grant to carry out a project called Alleviating Seniors Isolation Through Digital Media. We have hired a Program Coordinator, Jennifer Conroy. We have held Digital Literacy classes with the help of Burnaby Neighbourhood House for any senior who wants to take advantage of this opportunity. These classes are ongoing. We are currently providing classes in Beginner Tai Chi. The seniors who registered are mainly from Burnaby but some are from further afield, like Toronto and Ft St James thanks to the magic of virtual media. Looking forward, we have a painting instructor who will start classes in September in Beginning Watercolour Painting.

We have had virtual Workshops on Password Security, Online Security Basics and a ‘Tax Time’ Workshop with the CRA.

We have continued our advocacy work throughout the pandemic. We wrote to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in support of a national Pharmacare Program. We continue to call for national standards for Long-term Care and home care so that the majority of seniors can remain in their homes while getting the necessary support to do so.

We have also done our best to keep you in touch with your community and brought you information that you needed to stay safe in these trying times. We are optimistic that we will be able to meet in person in the fall and intend to continue with our virtual workshops until then and possibly after.

We hope that you will support us by attending our events and by renewing your membership. We always welcome new members as well!

Please consider filling out the membership form.
